I don't know if the bottom is truly out of the market or what, but have a look at this 1940 Aeronca Chief: LSA-qualifying, 275 SMOH, full logs, etc. etc. for TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS ($10,000). Insane!
UPDATE: It's interesting to observe how this airplane is better in many respects than airplanes of the same class and mission, only made 40, 50, 60 years later. I would not be mad enough to drive a 1940 car daily, a 1940 gun is obsolete, a 1940 computer did not even exist, but a 1940 airplane is quite competitive today, except in avionics (and the need for tailwheel endorsement). The 2020 ADS-B mandate is going to put a bit of a clamp on its utility, but even so, as a flying machine, it is still doing strong.
